Supporting Trans & Gender Non-Conforming Youth in the Garden

May 22 at 11AM PT/2PM ET

Gender expansive youth represent a growing demographic of students who utilize school gardens and outdoor classrooms. In spite of this, many programs continue to be built around traditional gender roles, from introducing classes as "Ladies and Gentlemen" to the ways that educators discuss the plants and animals in the garden. This webinar will provide research, resources, and information on ways to support Transgender and Gender Nonconforming (TGNC) youth in outdoor spaces. Starting from basic adjustments to everyday language, we will expand to challenge ourselves to create more accepting, welcoming spaces and lessons for our students.

Presenters will include:
- Amity Freiman, PLANTS Interim Manager at the Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture in Columbia, MO
- Ary Solomon, Site Coordinator at Grow Portland in Portland, Oregon

This webinar is a part of a webinar series highlighting participants of the 2023 SGSO Leadership Institute, hosted by Life Lab in partnership with Whole Kids Foundation and the SGSO Network. Every year, the SGSO Leadership Institute provides an opportunity for selected SGSO leaders from across the country to collaborate, learn from one another, and develop resources to share with a national audience.

This webinar will be recorded and archived on the Recording Library section of our Webinars page.
